Year Two is the final year of Key Stage One. Work previously covered in Year One is extended and consolidated and the children become able to work independently for sustained periods of time. The two Year 2 classes follow the same curriculum and the pupils’ work is planned together on a weekly basis by the Y2 teachers. We look forward to working with you and your child to make this a successful and happy year.
Year 2 pupils will require navy blue shorts and a white T-shirt. Please make sure that every item of kit is clearly labelled. This half term PE for Mrs. Leeming is on Monday & for Mrs Healey’s on Friday. PE days change throughout the year and we will notify you when Y2 will have their sessions. If the children are going to be outside in cooler weather they are allowed to wear a tracksuit.
Throughout the year we hope to take the children on several educational visits to enhance their learning. On occasion we invite Drama Workshops into school to support topic work. Parents will be informed by letter in advance of any planned visit.
Homework is set on a Friday, which is usually in the form of one English based activity & one Maths based activity ( inc.MyMaths). These can be found in your child’s homework folder. Homework is to be completed each week and returned to school by the following Wednesday. Occasionally other homework, to support topics, may be given instead of Literacy & Numeracy. Your child may also receive phonic/spelling homework from their Phonics teacher (this may not be the class teacher). Homework is differentiated and your child should be able to complete it with minimal support but we would appreciate it if you could check their homework with them over the weekend and if they have any problems we can discuss them on Monday before homework is due in.
Please take time to read with your child for at least ten minutes every night and add a comment or sign their reading diary when you have done this. Three take home books will be given each week and changed on Guided reading day. Pupils who practise their reading regularly at home tend to make significant progress and it also helps your child in all areas of the curriculum.
High Frequency Words
A copy of Reception to Y2 words will be included in your child’s reading diary. Your child needs to be able to read and spell each of these words by the end of Y2. We regularly assess your child with these words in the course of their work. Please try to make time to practise reading and spelling them. Please practise reading & spelling Common Exception Words sent home at the start of the year.
Phonics will continue to be taught on a daily basis. It is important that any words sent home are regularly practiced as part of daily reading homework.
